Hydro Rates to Increase May 1st

April 17, 2014

Queen’s Park – Hydro rates are set to increase again on May 1st due to the Liberal long-term energy plan, Chatham-Kent-Essex MPP Rick Nicholls said today.

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) says that the hike includes the arrival of additional “green” energy generation over the next 12 months.

“These costs are being driven up by disastrous policies like the Green Energy Act, which forced hundreds of industrial wind turbines on our communities with the promise of lower hydro bills. Bills have steadily increased,” Nicholls said.

Hydro rates have increased roughly 185 per cent under the Liberal government’s watch.

Based on the Wynne government’s long-term energy plan, Ontarians can expect rates to increase an additional 35-40 per cent by 2018.

“My offices get calls daily from constituents who are fed up with increasing hydro bills, and I continually hear from local businesses that are struggling to keep the lights on,” Nicholls stated.

Nicholls will be hosting a business roundtable in Leamington next Tuesday at Howard Johnson (201 Erie St N) at 11:00 am to hear how local businesses are being impacted by soaring energy costs.

“My focus is creating jobs and keeping life affordable for my constituents. Rising energy prices make it harder for families to get by and jeopardize our fragile local economy,” Nicholls concluded.
