Program to Combat Eating Disorders Comes to Chatham-Kent-Essex

July 4, 2012

(CHATHAM-KENT) – Chatham-Kent-Essex MPP Rick Nicholls congratulated the Chatham-Kent Community Health Centres (CKCHC) today for taking the lead in the fight against eating disorders in our communities.

Through the program, run in partnership with theNorth Lambtonand Grand Bend Community Health Centres, CKCHC nurse Kim Stockinger will receive extensive training in the field of eating disorders in order to assist families facing this terrible illness.

“This is an important program for our health providers in southwesternOntario,” said Nicholls. “We want to make sure that anybody facing such a debilitating, yet all too common, disease is getting the treatment they need.

Over half a million Canadians were diagnosed with an eating disorder in 2005. A disproportionate amount of those affected are women, who account for more than 90 percent of the hospital patients admitted for anorexia and bulimia inOntario.

Nicholls said this illness can be devastating to any family.

“The facts are striking, and saddening. With the success of this program now in Chatham-Kent, it’s our hope the necessary consultations and interventions will be available before diseases like anorexia or bulimia affect our loved ones.”

The program’s funding comes via the Erie-St. Clair LHIN, and will receive other crucial support from the Anorexia Nervosa Association, the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Bluewater Health and the Canadian Mental Health Association.
